Four parts of one town, and they are not alike

Concord is a single municipality that behaves like four. The historic centre sits under district review with kitchens in rear ells. West Concord is mill-era village housing on modest footprints. Nine Acre Corner runs out past the hospital into former farmland. Conantum is a 1950s modernist enclave by the river where the original open kitchens are still open. What that means in practice is that venting, gas runs and clearances differ street by street.

Concord Center

Concord Center, around Monument Square and out toward the Old North Bridge, holds Federal and Georgian colonials and 18th-century farmhouses under historic-district review. Kitchens sit in rear ells built against original chimney masses, which limits where a hood duct can go.

West Concord

West Concord village gathers along Commonwealth Avenue at the Fitchburg Line station, mixing Victorians with early-1900s mill-era housing and newer infill. Footprints are modest, so renovations tend to be gut jobs that put a pro range where a small freestanding one used to stand.

Conantum

Conantum is a 1950s mid-century modern neighbourhood bounded by the Sudbury River and Sudbury and Garfield Roads. Low-slope roofs, post-and-beam frames and glass walls leave nowhere to hide a range or its venting, and the original open kitchens are still open.

Process

Three stages, always in this order
